I’ve been a broadcast journalist for 26 years, and I spent a lot of that time being hard on my hair. For years, I used hot tools and harsh products like hairspray almost every single day. Not to mention, I was always stressed out-as a woman in a male-dominated industry, you’re always under a microscope-and stress isn’t good for your hair. I learned that the hard way.

I always had somewhat fine hair but starting in my mid-30s-almost 20 years ago now-I would lose clumps of it in the shower and every time I brushed my hair; it would also snap super easily.

My hair loss was the worst around my temples and the crown of my head, not an ideal place when you look directly at a camera for a living. Plus, I often had to wear my hair back while covering games in windy weather, which only highlighted the hair loss in my temple area.

When you work in TV, there’s a level of self-awareness and self-consciousness that come with the territory-especially in the age of social media where people don’t hesitate to write mean things about the way you look-but hair loss amplifies all of that. I was often worried about my hair when I was on camera.

I tried a lot of different solutions: I wore hats and used hair extensions to make up for the thinning. If I was in the studio hosting a show, the extensions were fine. But I was always concerned the wind would blow them off when I was reporting outside. I tried more long-term solutions, like biotin supplements and Rogaine, but I never got the results I was hoping for.

Finally, I turned to a friend who works in the hair-care industry, and she suggested Nutrafol, a hair-growth supplement she had just started selling in her salon. I don’t like putting things in my body that I’m not familiar with, so I was hesitant at first. But I did some research and liked that the ingredients were natural, and they seemed to tackle hair loss from multiple angles. I took a quiz about my lifestyle, diet, and hair-loss patterns, along with a hair mineral test, and I learned that my cortisol levels were through the roof.

I also saw experts (a dermatologist and two naturopathic physicians) who helped me understand the real reason why my hair was falling out: stress. (Editor’s note: It’s true-stress can affect your hair.) I was focusing on the cosmetic aspect of hair loss for so long, but I never acknowledged that I was way too stressed for my own good.

So, I started taking personalized supplements that had stress-relieving herbs like ashwagandha and curcumin, a derivative of turmeric, and I saw a difference within the first few months. I used to be able to hold a piece of hair, and it would break easily. Now, almost three years later, the thickness is more like heavy-duty dental floss. It’s hard to break. My hair has grown back in the temple areas and in the crown, but it’s the thickness that really enabled me to ditch the hair extensions.

I’m also a lot nicer to my hair overall. I stopped using hairspray, which is loaded with alcohol and is basically the devil, and I limit my blow drying as much as possible. If I’m not doing anything on-air, I’ll let it dry naturally to reduce the heat and the brush pulling on my head. I also use alcohol-free products with all-natural, organic ingredients, and I swear it’s made a difference.

The biggest change is my stress levels, though. I’ve taken the analysis again and my cortisol levels were way down-a huge victory.

Of course, I knew I was stressed before, but taking the stress test really helped put it in perspective. I think it’s common to accept a certain level of anxiety in our lives-in a lot of ways, we think stress is associated with success. But I had no idea how much my stress had been impacting my hair, and there was nothing “successful” about that.

Now, in addition to the stress-reducing supplements, I do yoga, make time for my family and friends, and prioritize sleep. And not only is my hair healthier, but I feel better, calmer, and sleep better at night. I started with a beauty problem, and I ended with a total lifestyle overhaul.
