Glencruitten House, a historic baronial property on the west coast of Scotland overlooking the Isle of Mull, is on the market for €975,000 (US$1.069 million).
The 17-acre estate, which is 1.3 miles from the popular coastal resort town of Oban, was listed on Feb. 21 by Nicky Archibald of Galbraith. The identity of the seller could not immediately be determined, and Ms. Archibald declined to reveal it.
She said the seller, who has owned the property for some time, had bought it with the intention of turning it into a Christian religious community, but that the idea never fully got off the ground.

“He’s selling because the property is too big for him,” she said, adding that there were tenants who vacated when the house was listed.
She said Glencruitten House, which has a historic designation, is special because “it’s unusual to have a property of that size and historic note so close to Oban. There are not many like it in the area.”
The castle-like house, which was built in 1897 and includes additions erected in 1905 and 1926, is in a secluded setting that includes a fully stocked trout pond.
The house has 11 bedrooms, five bathrooms and three dining kitchens informally divided to create separate living areas.

Its main rooms include a first-floor library designed by noted Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer, who is known for his work in the Scots Baronial and Gothic Revival styles and for his promotion of the Arts and Crafts movement. The room features woodwork and paneling as well as stained-glass windows and a historically listed Ingram pipe organ.
In addition to a dining room, a morning room, a garden room and an office in a tower, the house has a large first-floor balcony.
“The house is tucked away, it has lovely views, and it borders woodlands,” Ms. Archibald said.
Many of the home’s original features, including the wooden flooring, doors, cornices and fireplaces remain intact, she said.

Noting that the current owner repaired the roof and windows, rewired the house, installed a fire alarm and removed dry rot, Ms. Archibald said that “the property still needs some more work.”
Glencruitten House is surrounded by gardens that the seller recently renovated and is encircled by a large gravel path with seating that provides views of the Isle of Mull, Scotland’s fourth-largest island. There’s also a rockery that dates to the 1920s and a croquet lawn.
Ms. Archibald said the property may be used as a grand private residence or developed as a hotel, a guest house or a retreat for multiple-occupancy use.
Oban, which is in the Argyll and Bute council area of Scotland, is a popular tourist town. In addition to shops and schools and other local services, the town offers regular ferry service to the Inner and Outer Isles and trains to Glasgow.
The listing first appeared in the Daily Mail.
