Homes reminiscent of European villas create a lifestyle uncommon to Greenwich - Greenwich Time

At the turn of the 20th Century, Mediterranean Revival architecture was becoming in vogue in the United States. Architects created the genre by blending elements found among Spanish, Andalusian and Italian design. Exterior features are familiar and recognizable in the form of tiled roofs, stucco walls, and lush gardens and landscaping.

This week, Greenwich Time takes a look at Mediterranean Revival-inspired residences currently on the market.

A five-bedroom Mediterranean-styled residence at 1 Quaker Lane, Greenwich is currently listed by Mark Pruner of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, New England Properties. The asking price is $1.395 million. A circular, courtyard-like drive leads to the front of the 5,613-square-foot home, topped with a terracotta roof.

1 Quaker Lane made its debut in 1925, and today, it presides over a 2.45-acre lot The interiors have hardwood and parquet flooring, generously proportioned public rooms and one-of-a-kind design elements, such as a free-floating staircase and several fireplaces, including two that were imported from Europe - one in the second-level master suite and another in the formal living room. The floor plan also offers a second option for a master suite on the main level; it sits adjacent to another bedroom that has an entrance of its own, making it well suited for live-in staff or guests.

Among the grounds at 1 Quaker Lane, buyers will also discover a private pool nestled among gardens.

Mediterranean Revival in Rock Ridge

Ronald Nyman, Esq., a broker with Compass Connecticut, is representing the seller of 6 Meadow Drive, Greenwich, a four-bedroom, six-bath home that’s located in-town and in the Rock Ridge association.

“It is quite special to find Mediterranean-themed architecture here in Greenwich,” Nyman noted. “As we all know, the majority of homes that we see are colonial inspired. I always enjoy seeing homes that are different, and a Greenwich Mediterranean-themed home certainly stands out in a wonderful way.”

The 1.9-acre lot has “newly renovated exterior landscaping,” according to the broker. Inside, the one-level floor plan positions the public rooms - a great room with living and dining rooms combined, a library, family room and expansive kitchen to one side of the home, with the bedrooms privately situated to the other.

“Several examples of Mediterranean architecture in this home are the stucco walls with pastel hues, the open floor plan and the high ceilings,” Nyman said.

There are several standout interior spaces here, including an updated kitchen and beautiful breakfast room with nearly floor-to-ceiling windows. The master suite is generously proportioned, with hardwood flooring, a fireplace in the bedroom, and a marble-appointed en-suite bath.

“This house has a wonderful history and has been the home to several families over its 110-year history,” according to Nyman. “It is conveniently located within walking distance to downtown Greenwich. It also was the prime location for Drew Barrymore’s 2008 photo shoot for POP Magazine.”

6 Meadow Drive had a recent price reduction; the property is now listed for $2.35 million.
