Alzheimer's Association to host educational programs at YMCA - St. Augustine Record

The Alzheimer’s Association Central and North Florida chapter will host a series of educational programs at the local St. Augustine Family YMCA. Over the duration of nine months, four separate sessions will take place to discuss three different topics. During this interactive series, attendees are encouraged to participate and engage in discussions about understanding the disease, knowing the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s, and learning to live a healthier life for the brain and body.

"It is so exciting to be able to provide the Greater Jacksonville area with a series of programs that are meant to accomplish two things: education and awareness,” said Milva Ballester, Alzheimer’s Association program manager for the Central and North Florida chapter. “The importance of recognizing that there are lifestyle changes that can be implemented to potentially reduce the risk of cognitive decline is immense. Furthermore, recognizing the warning signs and better understanding Alzheimer's disease and dementia may be beneficial to families in the community. We are looking forward to spreading this information in a fun and interactive way."

On Feb. 10 and May 20, Ballester will cover healthy living for the brain and body. She’ll explain the importance of a healthy lifestyle and share tips from the latest research regarding diet, exercise, social engagement and cognitive use.

Ballester will then explain the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease on July 20. It’s important to understand and differentiate what is considered to be normal aging and when to be concerned and see a doctor. Receiving an early diagnosis can help slow the progression of the disease, hopefully allowing the individual living with Alzheimer’s to live a longer life while being able to partake in clinical studies.

On Sept. 15, Ballester will help those attending the educational series understand the complexity of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

The free series will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. at the St. Augustine Family YMCA, 500 Pope Road.
