Library News: Media-Upper Providence Library offers Healthy Living seminars - The Delaware County Daily Times

MEDIA — Media-Upper Providence Library, 1 E. Front St., Media, will offer “The Art of Healthy Living” seminars this month. The free seminars will help people live a healthier lifestyle.

On Thursday, Jan. 16, a “Weight Loss” seminar will be held from 6-7 p.m.

On Sunday, Jan. 26, 2-3:30 p.m., “Dinner with the Doctor” seminar will be held, along with a plant-based cooking demonstration.

Writers Circle forming at Ridley Township Library

RIDLEY TOWNSHIP— Ridley Township Public Library and Resource Center is starting a writers group this month that will meet 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month. An exception will be the April meeting, which will be on the third Sunday, April 19. Writers are invited to come to the library meeting room to receive feedback on creative works in progress and give feedback to others in a friendly and supportive community. Fiction, poetry, plays and essays are welcome to be brought in.

The Ridley Writers Circle is not a class or workshop. It is intended to support adult writers who are looking to improve ongoing work by submitting it for comment and critique. The group will be led by Rich Conti, an author who has participated in writers groups, and recently edited a friend’s novel and guided him through the copyright and self-publishing process.

Lansdowne Library offers Trek Club, open mic, and family game night

LANSDOWNE — The Lansdowne Library has some special events planned for January.

Star Trek fans of all ages are invited to join the Library’s new Trek Club, 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26. Those who haven't seen much Star Trek but want to watch more can also take advantage of this opportunity. The club will explore the themes, characters, and strange new worlds of this ionic sci-fi series. After the first meeting, club leaders will assign episodes to watch for the next meeting's discussion.

The Lansdowne Library invites local residents to share their talents, music, and poetry at Open Mic night at the 20-20 House, 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 31. The library will provide amps, a cajon, and a PA system. The Library supports free speech and will not censor the content of performances. However, no platform will be provided for hate speech.  

 Every second and fourth Wednesday, the library will host family game night at 5 p.m. Local residents are encouraged to bring their family and friends to the library for an evening of board games. People can bring their own favorites or select a game from the library collection. If they like the game, they can check it out with their library card. All players 10 and under must be supervised by a parent or guardian. Bring your family or friends to the library and enjoy a fun evening of board games.

Swarthmore Public Library offers cultural events and more this month

SWARTHMORE — Swarthmore Public Library offers numerous free cultural programs, all open to the public. All programs are free and open to the public. 

An Italian Cultural Night was held Monday to garner interest for an ongoing Italian American Social Club at the library. Attendees were asked what items of interest they would be interested in exploring at future meetings. Topics include recipes, travel performing arts, history, business, fine arts, fashion, conversational Italian, wine tasting, genealogy, and more, For information about the next club meeting, contact Anthony DiTommaso, facilitator, at 610-500-3352 or tonydito15@yahoo.com/.

A program geared exclusively to Italian Conversation will be held 12 noon Friday, Jan. 17. The session is an opportunity to practice Italian conversation with vocabulary, activities, partnered

chats, and more.

In another cultural program, a friendly group of proficient French speakers meets each month to talk about art, literature, history, or current events, Facilitated by Lucy Saxon, the group will meet 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17 at the library. Swarthmore Library will host a Workshop for Writers 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21. Everyone is invited to the supportive, informal writers’ group at the Library with times for writing, sharing, and offering feedback.

Mystery Mondays are held at Swarthmore Library every Monday in the Council Room, from 3 to 5 p.m. for adults. Attendees are invited to watch British and International mystery TV series. 

For those who enjoy knitting, crocheting and needleworking, the In Stitches: Yarn & Needle Work group will meet Thursday, Jan. 23 at 10 a.m. No matter what their skill level, everyone is welcome to join this monthly In Stitches club to learn and share tips and ideas

while enjoying lively conversations with fellow crafters.  Some supplies will be available for newcomers.

The Video Lecture Series:  History of the Islamic Golden Age continues this month through Feb. 27, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Thursdays. Refreshments will be available.

The Islamic Golden Age was one of the most remarkable periods of scholarly achievement and cultural flourishing in human history. Covering the years from approximately 750–1250, the advancements made during this period are akin to the blossoming of wisdom in ancient Greece, or the later European Renaissance. Like ancient Greece and the European Renaissance, the Islamic Golden Age was made possible by a happy coincidence of politics, patronage, and great minds.

Go on a binge at Springfield Township Library

SPRINGFIELD— The Springfield Township Library has introduced Binge Boxes to its Youth Services Collection. These new items are targeted to families with babies through school aged children. Parents and caregivers can choose from over 20 boxes and enjoy four DVDs, for one week—all free of charge.

Themes include Thomas the Tank Engine, Curious George, Dinosaurs and many more. Stop in the Youth Services Library to browse the collection and binge the cold away. The library is at 70 Powell Rd., Springfield. For more information, call 610-543-2113. 

Upper Chichester plans designer handbag bingo fundraiser

UPPER CHICHESTER — The public is invited to Upper Chichester Library’s bingo night, 7-10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8 at Upper Chichester Township Municipal Building, 8500 Furey Rd., Upper Chichester, for the chance to win trendy designer bags.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $30. Bingo winners will get a chance to win designer bags from Kate Spade, Vera Bradley, Michael Kors and Tory Burch and a 50/50 too.  Refreshments will be available for purchase.
